Ulama ideal dalam definisinya Sayyid Qutub adalah orang-orang yang memikirkan dan memahami kitab Allah sehingga mereka dapat mengenal Allah melalui ciptaanNya, menemukan Allah dengan segala kekuasaanNya, merasakan keagungan Allah dengan melihat hakikat penciptaanNya, sehingga mereka menjadi benar-benar takut, bertaqwa dan benar-benar menyembahnya. Namun al-Ghazaly di dalam kitab Ihya’Ulumuddin mengemukakan dikotomi ulama, yaitu ada ulama dunia dan ada ulama akhirat.
