Description Introduction: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic degenerative disease involving synovial inflammation of the joints where free radicals play a role in its progression. Current OA treatment is only reducing the symptoms that have side effects if used in the long term, therefore, alternative treatments are needed, one of which uses herbs. Red ginger (Zingiber officinale var rubrum)and cogon grass(Imperata cylindrica) rhizomes (RGCG) have a free radical scavenger effect. SOD and MDA are indicators of free radical activity, however, the research on the combination of RGCG in OA rats has never been done.Method: 4-month-old male Wistar rats were divided into 5 groups (n = 5), namely: negative group (KN), positive group (KP), treatment 1 (P1) (dose 9 mg+40 mg), treatment 2 (P2) (dose 18 mg+40 mg), and treatment 3 (P3) (dose 36+40 mg). KPwas made by inducing 0.1 ml Intra-articular Complete Freund's Adjuvantin the rat's right knee. Combination of RGCG decoction are given for 10 days from the appearance of OA sign. Serum SOD and MDA were examined using a spectrophotometer method. Results were considered significant if p <0.05.Results:SOD serumlevels KN: 38.58 ± 1,33, KP: 19,23 ± 4,75, P1: 31,12 ± 1,27, P2: 32,91 ± 1,04, P3: 37,37 ± 1,84. KP were significantly different from KN (p <0.05). P1, P2, and P3 were significantly different from KP (p <0.05). MDA serum levels KN: 0.07 ± 0.02, KP: 0.24 ± 0.04, P1: 0.21 ± 0.02, P2: 0.16 ± 0.03, P3: 0.13 ± 0.02. KP, P1, P2, and P3 were significantly different from KN (p <0.05). P2 and P3 were significantly different from KN, KP, and P1 (p <0.05).Conclusion: The combination of rhizome red ginger and cogon grass decoction can increase SOD serum levels and reduce MDA serum levels so that it can be an alternative treatment for osteoarthritis.Keywords: Osteoarthritis, Red Ginger rhizome, Cogon Grass rhizome, SOD, MDA
