Developmental students have slightly different learning principles from other common children,
both in understanding concepts or solving mathematical problems. This study aims to determine
the type of gestures performed by retarded students and the resulting role in solving
mathematical problems. There are 3 (three) subjects from 6 (six) mentally retarded students in
class VII and VIII. The selection of the three subjects is based on the exploration of the gestures
used when solving mathematical problems. The approach used in this study is a qualitative
approach. Research data in the form of descriptions of the types of gestures used and their role
in solving mathematical problems. The data collection process is carried out by audiovisual
recording of all student activities during the process of solving mathematical problems in
SDLBN Lamongan. The data analysis activity was carried out exploratively and continued
continuously until it was completed, so that the data was saturated. The results of the study
described the types of gestures performed by students in two types namely deictic gestures,
iconic gestures, and writing gestures. In this study it was found that retarded students use
gestures in solving problems in order to (1) Communicate students' thinking about Mathematics
(2) Scaffolding for mentally retarded students (3) Focusing attention retarded students.
